Multi-platinum engineer and producer Kenny Gioia demonstrates his workflow from initial microphone setup through final vocal automation within a mix. The course begins with microphone selection and placement, including the use of pop filters and wind screens. You’ll learn proper recording levels for a DAW, how to set mic preamps, and when to use compression during tracking. Kenny also demonstrates EQ and compression techniques applied both before and after recording. Additional lessons cover adding reverb and delay for space and inspiration during sessions, recording multiple takes efficiently, and comping them into a finished master performance. Editing techniques are explored using Elastic Audio and Beat Detective, along with sidechain compression and an efficient method for recording background vocals. The course concludes with de-essing, tuning using Antares Auto-Tune 7, revisiting processing decisions, and automating the lead vocal to sit properly in the mix.
